Introduction

the sounds and smells of marrige

By dennis t. nadeau

I've never knowingly entered a bad relationship, and no one walks down the aisle believing love will fail. We all start with hope, don't we? I used to think love was all grand gestures and cinematic moments, sweeping announcements, urgent airport chases, and passionate rain-soaked kisses. Boy, was I spectacularly wrong.

Learning the truth took years of real-life experience and reflection: the strongest bonds are often the quietest. It’s the smell of chicken pot pie in the oven, the sound of keys jingling in the door after a long day waiting for her to come home, the simple comfort of a hug, or a hand finding yours without a word. These unremarkable yet significant moments are the bedrock of something profound. Over time, you learn what you want in a partner and, more importantly, what you don’t. You realize that while fireworks are spectacular, the steady flame of a candle lights your way home night after night.

Eventually, you stop chasing a perfect checklist and start noticing the small things that matter.

I first noticed a trace of Janice’s shampoo on the pillow after a night at her place. It was clean, fresh, and familiar in a way I couldn’t explain. Then came the surprise of her Massachusetts accent slipping out when she said, "Pahk the cah", a small reminder of exactly who I’d fallen for. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was honest and real.

Marriage isn’t like the final scene of a romantic comedy. It’s finding your coffee waiting on the counter in the morning, or the car warming up because they know you can’t stand the cold. It’s handing you the remote without saying anything because they know exactly what kind of day you’ve had. And yes, it’s even the awkward, funny stuff we don’t talk about enough, like that occasional suspicious smell blamed on the dog or cat. (Yes, we're going there, because, in a real relationship, even bodily functions ‘farts’ become part of your shared language, sometimes hilarious sometimes not so much, but always real.)

The Sounds and Smells of Marriage is a love letter to the unnoticed. Through these pages, Janice and I, along with others, share stories that capture love’s energy: the bustle of a crowded restaurant where our first conversation, well, just flowed… the rhythm of Sunday mornings, the sharp static of arguments, and the laughter. You’ll smell the good, such as the first lasagna she cooked that said "home" more than words ever could, and the not-so-good, like the faint aroma of yard-work sweat from a long day outside, or the occasional feline funk that marks a lived-in life.

You won't find airbrushed romance or carefully edited relationship highlights in these pages. This isn't a book about perfect love. It's about real love, love that grows through awkward moments, mismatched moods, and clashing personalities. It's about the small habits that become sacred without ceremony, the quiet encouragement when doubt creeps in, and the eye roll that says, "I love you, but seriously?"

Beyond the sounds and smells, marriage is about how we grow together instead of apart. We'll learn to hear each other through words, tone, patterns, silence, and even breath.

That's why this isn't a manual. It's a mirror, a reflective surface that might show you how beautiful, messy, and meaningful your love story is. Whether you've been married for decades, are just starting, or are simply curious about what it means to share your life with another imperfect yet perfect person, I hope you'll find something that resonates with you here. These stories may surprise you, make you laugh, or even bring a tear to your eye.

This beautiful mess of emotions is the heartbeat of a marriage, it's messy, tender, and hilarious. And it might just help you hear the symphony playing in your life.

Here's to the sounds that make your heart swell and the smells that bring you home. To the whispered "I'm sorry," the playlists, the smell of burnt toast, the joyful tears, and yes, the odd fart which reminds you that love doesn't have to be pretty to be real.

And with that reality in mind, pull up a chair. Pour yourself something comforting, and let's talk about love as it is. A beautiful mess of sounds and smells that add to everything.
